In BJJ our grips often tell the technique we are attempting to use. And if our training partner or opponent during a competition is able to interpret the grips quick enough they can prevent the technique.

In this video our White Belt friend Mike is having issues with his Armbar from the Guard.

What’s happening is that he has the opportunity to grab an arm and go for an Armbar. But when he goes for the basic grip he’s learned in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu his training partners recognize it and pull their arm back.

This immediately stops his Armbar attempt.

His question is how to get around this Armbar problem.

In the video I go back to a principle for Brazilian Jiujitsu I call Flying Under the Radar. Which means that I’m going to conceal my grip and my attack.

And the idea behind this is to change the grip you use to attack and don’t get tight with the grip till the very end of the movement when it’s too late to escape.
