One of the toughest question for a BJJ coach to answer when asked by a student is, “What do I need to work on?”
This seems like it should be an easy question for them to answer. A high level Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner often has hundreds and thousands of techniques stored away in their body ready to dispense.
And this lies the problem. Too vague a question and too many options to choose from.
If you brought your car to the shop and told the mechanic, “Hey can you fix my car?” but you never identifies what was wrong with it he’s going to have some trouble.
But if you come in and say, “Can you fix my car, the brakes are making a loud noise when I use them.”
The mechanic can immediately look to find the issue.
And your Brazilian Jiujitsu coach isn’t different in this sense. They need some specific problems or questions to be of the most use to you.
And so if you want to get better at grappling and you want to approach your BJJ coach with a question.
First you need to put some thought into your game to figure out what you’d like to ask.
With a more specific question your BJJ instructor can be more specific with their answer rather than give you the ole, “Keep training.”
I hope this helps if you had a situation like this.

If you didn’t watch the Kasai Pro 5 last on April 6, you missed out on some serious action!! Atos HQ’s very own Kaynan Duarte put on one of the best shows we’ve seen this year… in any event! One of the highlights was his pretzelbolo to back take on Craig Jones!
If you think it looked familiar…. well yeah, Professor Andre Galvao teaches several variations at Atos HQ!
