Getting smashed in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is important! As a White Belt part of your beginning in BJJ is learning just how vulnerable you are. And when you get smashed and submitted by a higher level belt during rolling it makes you aware of the reality of the martial art.
In this video we have a newer BJJ White Belt who says he has submitted a Black Belt. He feels as though the Black Belt is actually using the full extent of their skill and that he is getting a legitimate tap on him.
His questions is whether or not he should lighten up on this Black Belt during training or keep going.
In this video, I share how I think the Black Belt is letting the White Belt work. I’m nice about it. And because I’m not there I don’t really know. But based on my almost 20 years of Brazilian Jiujitsu I have a good hunch what’s going on.
Many times experienced practitioners know the difficult road that lays ahead for the newcomer to Jiujitsu and so they try to ease the person into it slowly. Playing down significantly in their skill and ability.
In this video I describe a story from my gym to put the situation into context so that it can hopefully be helpful to our friend.
Thanks for watching the video.

Old school muscle sweep + transition to knee bar.
.
This is a classic old school sweep when the opponent is standing in your closed guard.
note that this is one of the ONLY sweeps performed with closed legs. most of the “closed guard sweeps” that you’ll see are just sweeps that you need to open the guard to be able to execute them. This is one of the only few true closed guard sweeps. I chose the variation where I keep my legs closed the whole time, the old school variation. You can open the legs upon impact and you won’t suffer from the opponent falling on your legs and making it hard for you to mount. BUT you leave more space and escape opportunities from him. Even risk heel hook entries.
When I am not able to go for the first sweep because his tries to push my knees and is able to base on his far leg, I can try to go for the knee bar. It is advanced but very surprising.
Give it a try!
