When I first started learning the Butterfly Guard, I used to make myself so tired! I was using my legs all wrong and I didn’t understand the idea of off-balancing (Kuzushi) at all. As I gained more experience and began to study the games of BJJ champions such as Marcelo Garcia, Braulio Estima and Jean Jacques Machado, the beauty and efficiency of the position started to come to me.
In this video, I break down a really simple, basic Butterfly Sweep. This technique is fundamental to understanding how the Butterfly Hooks are supposed to be applied in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
In the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system, the Butterfly Guard can often look quite different. Besides there being no gi to grab, there’s also the idea of lineage at play. Our Butterfly Guard is generally passed down to Eddie Bravo from Jean Jacques Machado, one of the great Butterfly players in Jiu Jitsu history. As such, there’s a huge emphasis on overhooks and using the body to control the opponent rather than gi grips.
Beyond that, the Butterfly Guard is the perfect launching pad for all of the best submissions from Rubber Guard. My favorites from here include the Flying Kung Fu to Go Go Clinch, and the standard Gogoplata. Triangle Choke is always around the corner, too.
