The rodeo ride is an effective control position and this video shows how to apply it when your opponent is in the turtle position or flat on his front.

We posted the video on Monday night. You guys shared it. By Tuesday night at 6pm not only did we get the hero Maurice on the mat for his first class at Gracie University HQ but we also got Antonio (the boy he rescued) to start learning Jiu-Jitsu as well.
Gracie University is sponsoring both of them with year-long tuition free memberships at any of the 200+ Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Centers around the world – but both for very different reasons:
Maurice has the heart of a Lion. These skills will simply teach him to fight fire with water. If his verbal de-escalation skills ever fail, he will have the ability to physically de-escalate so that the altercation is resolved with lowest probability of injury to everyone involved.
For Antonio, learning Jiu-Jitsu will rebuild his confidence so he can hold his head high in the wake of such a brutal attack. When one is senselessly assaulted at such a young age, it can completely alter the direction of your life. At Gracie University, we won’t let that happen to Antonio.
I spoke to Dana White and he agreed to give these guys the experience of a lifetime at any upcoming UFC event. When I told Maurice and Antonio, they were totally shocked, and very grateful.
This video I demonstrate another option to escape side control using an underhook. Check out the details and you are sure to find something useful! Enjoy! If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please comment below. More videos to come! Please like, share, and subscribe!!

Today’s Q&A comes from Logan who wants to know how to roll hard with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belts without being disrespectful. He says that when he rolls he gets a catch on a submission or sweep but then feels hamstrung to finish it because he doesn’t want to go too hard to finish it.
This is a good question! I used to deal with this same thing years ago where I wanted to go hard with my BJJ coaches but didn’t want to disrespect them.
And as a BJJ Black Belt who’s got a modicum of celebrity in the Jiu-jitsu space I can tell you that there are cases where we can train super hard and it’s a great rolling session. On the flip side, I’ve trained with people where I feel irritated and don’t want to roll with a person again.
I’ll explain the difference between the 2 in the video and I hope this helps you if you’re in a similar situation.
Thanks for watching.

Time in nature is good for the soul, but this was also a bit of a post-covid training camp trying to recover lung function. I ended up spending 4 days, 67 kilometers and 2,600 vertical meters of elevation gain at elevations of roughly 2,000 meters
The fourth day – the day after I filmed this video – I had a breakthrough. Not sure what happened physiologically, but all of a sudden I could walk up hills at a not-horrible pace and didn’t need to take breaks every 5-10 minutes. Very pleased with this turnaround!
For background, I dodged Covid for 3 years with masking and testing, but eventually my luck had to run out. I caught it either at a firefighting hazmat conference (oh the irony) in the States or on the flight back. KN95s are like seatbelts – they work, but don’t guarantee safety 100% of the time 🙁
First, I was flat in bed for 8 days, 23 hours a day. Fever, nausea, coughing, short of breath, the works. I ended up in the hospital for remdesivir IV infusions which might have helped a little bit. After that I thought I was getting better – did some easy workouts and even gently rolled twice – but then I relapsed and it came back hard.
Extreme shortness of breath and fever brought me back to the hospital on my birthday, where they were initially worried about a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs). That got ruled out and it was decided that the difficulty breathing was probably ‘just’ damage to the microvasculature in the lungs. Anyway, I ended up on more drugs to deal with that.
Since it’s 2023 I’m doubtless going to be attacked by some trolls with degrees from Joe Rogan Do Your Own Research University, questioning how I could be so badly affected despite being up to date in my vaccinations.
That’s pretty simple.
In 2015 I had a life-saving kidney transplant, and to stop my own immune system from attacking my kidney I have to take immunosuppressants for life. The side effects of these drugs are pretty minimal, but they do make you a LOT more vulnerable to Covid (the infection fatality rate was 2,000% higher than the regular population last I looked).
So I’m much MORE vulnerable to Covid because of the transplant, and much LESS vulnerable to Covid because I’m fully vaccinated and boosted. The two basically cancel out, and it likely would have been much, much worse had I not been up to date on my boosters.
Cheers,
Stephan Kesting
