Rafael Lovato Classic when he was 21 years Old – “Appreciate all the beatings your training partners give to you”
This clip is from a professional event called the Black Belt Pro held in 2005 back when I was a hungry, 21yr old Black Belt. It was one of my first big events as a Black Belt & here I am facing the legend Leo Dalla, who had beat me in a no-gi match the year before when I was a still a brown belt. The inside story to this victory, is that I had never performed a head & arm Ezekiel choke before. I really wasn’t too familiar with that move until the very week of this event when my brother @xanderibeirojj demolished me in training & tapped me with it several times. I asked him how the move worked & he showed me, but I didn’t have the chance to practice it yet. Then, there I was in the middle of a match in a great position to use it. I felt the energy & went for it. After I won, I looked straight at Xande & pointed at him. It was a great moment! ??? Moral of the story, appreciate all the beatings your training partners give to you. Don’t be too proud to ask them how they caught you & learn from it. That same move might win you some money ?
