The only berimbolo I approve of is a flying berimbolo. A video from four years ago. Do you think it could work? @hyperfly

One of the main reasons no gi guys hate training in the gi is they don’t have the knowledge of all the grip breaks for every position. Every control guard in Jiujitsu has grips that slow you down significantly. But with simple knowledge of how to break every one of these grips from all the guards you are free as a bird to fly around and move really fast. And then use your top grips to dominate. The reason I play lapel guards is that they are the only guards in jj that are very very difficult to break. Anyways sign up to my website to see all the grip break knowledge so you don’t get stuck in someone’s guard and feel helpless. @hyperfly

The latest lapel submission I came up with it puts pressure on the arm similar to a extended kimura. This is probably one of the funkiest submissions to ever exist and that’s why I love it. It excels against people trying to disengage and run away and that’s what makes it great. The more scared of the lapel position they are, the more this submission punishes their unwillingness to learn and adapt to this style. My training partner here is none of those things and did a great job helping me train and practice new things? Something that frustrates me is the 1000s of instagram videos of people demonstrating a move that they never even do in training. Watch out for those, you could be drilling and wasting time on a move that doesn’t even work and was just for that Instagram wow factor. Those videos just lower the over all quality of everyone’s Jiujitsu. They are poisoning our Jiujitsu supply. Make sure the move works live and the person actually uses the move they are showing. @hyperfly @keenanonline #americanjiujitsu
A common issue from playing lapel guard. People standing straight up. This is a good example of people putting themselves in bad positions to avoid an obvious threat. You can advantage of them over compensating on their defense and going to a pretty non-threatening and vulnerable stance, just to avoid your attack. Being aware that this is a common defense allows you to redirect your motion into a technique that can directly counter and take advantage of their overcompensation. Counters to the counters. @keenanonline – at the time of this filming the polish worm rider wasn’t as developed as it is now. It’s no longer niche / and it has taken the forefront of the lapel attacks. Stay tuned for updates on that.

We often get asked: “how do I play Lapel Guard when my opponent puts both knees on the mat to stop me from playing Lapel Guard?” Well, the answer is “The Polish Worm Rider”.

How I view guard vs passing. From guard you are looking for specific grips ideally for you best sweeps and subs. But from you kinda just have to run at them and be aggressive and take what you can get. The moves from passing all chain together so well, you can just go balls to the wall if you have a good flow. But, from guard if you mess up you usually can’t transition super smoothly into another sweep when one fails. You have to reset and try the same sweep or different one. With the exception of berimbolo attacks. Which can flow pretty hard, if you know what you are doing, which about 6 or 7 people in the world actually know what they are doing. You know what, side track for a second, all you idiots tagging me saying berimbolo works. Homie, berimbolo doesn’t work for YOU because you suck. Levi, Mikey , Essen, tommy, both miyaos, and Jonatha and one or 2 purple belts, actually know the entire berimbolo system and can flow with it and wreck shop. They rest of you are wasting your time because unless you have about 9 years to dedicate to that style you aren’t ever going to understand it. It’s way more complex and requires a crazy amount of dexterity talent and skill. you all should just stick to something easy that can be effective for anyone if you want to do well. @hyperfly
Some nice relaxing sparring footage for you. On @keenanonline mellow out, listen to some lofi hip hop and try to spot the details. @hyperfly
One of the most common questions I get is “what do I do when my opponent drops to his knees and doesn’t want to try to pass?” Well this is a band aid a lot of people try. But passing on your knees is very dangerous if you can’t get to double under/over under passing positions. You are exposed to a lot of old school submission set ups that had become almost impossible to hit in today’s meta of standing passing knee cuts and leg drags. But the game comes full circle when the lapel guards force people out of the meta and they revert to older styles to deal with the pressure. That’s when cool push pull concepts and closed guard type attacks open up. It’s a cycle. And you fell right into it! This is a squid guard arm bar set up that I like to use. It’s difficult to see from this angle but I have squid and dropped to his knees and I have a squid ? closed guard thing going on @hyperfly @keenanonline @spyder_korea

Saved by the worm. I had to help out my boys guard. @mariolopez has some dope wrestling and guard passing already (he smushed sunshine with the most brutal face crank I’ve ever seen) and now he’s got the worm system for his bottom game. I feel bad for whoever he faces in the next celebrity death match. (Anybody remember that show) anyways part 1 of this lesson is on the site @keenanonline @hyperfly
