Lately, I’ve been playing around with an unorthodox position that combines the upper body control of the lazer guard with the lower body control of a half guard/shin on shin position with some interesting results.⠀

One of my favorite attacks from this weird position is a variation of the Giggler sweep, which is itself a weird sweep that I originally learned from @seanrobertsbjj and takes advantage of your opponent driving in with pressure when you have prematurely taken away their ability to base, resulting in an almost effortless sweep.⠀

Any seasoned grappler knows that passing a tough opponent’s guard is only half the battle. You also need to be able to stabilize the pass and secure the position, which can sometimes be a very hard thing to do.⠀

So I present to you a grip combination that, when secured, gives your opponent very little hope of being able to turn away from you OR into you and can quickly exhaust your opponent, all while you have to spend very little energy.⠀

In order for your opponent to fully pass your guard, they need to get past your feet, knees, and hips. ⠀

If they’ve managed to squish your legs together with pressure to beat your feet and knees, but haven’t quite secured the guard pass yet, you can use some crafty upper body karate to get your hips free and reset the position entirely.⠀

Just about every jiu jitsu technique requires some kind of setup or off-balance for it to work against a high-level opponent, and guard pulling is no different.⠀

Rather than pull guard on a completely stationary opponent (which can secure you a one-way ticket to bottom side control if you’re not careful), I’m going to show how you can add a small off-balance so your opponent is more worried about their base than they are your guard pull.⠀
⠀
And, if done with precise timing, this guard pull can lead right into a Tomo Nage and score you an early 2 points.⠀
