Training periodically in uniform helps you realize how different it is. Wearing the vest and belt significantly limit torso flexion, and boots get stuck on shirts, jackets and any other loose clothing. Retaining your tools/weapons is another variable that adds to the difficulty (My taser and radio have fallen out on their own more than once while stuck on the bottom of the fight). Aside from the #selfdefense and #fitness benefits, this is where #jiujitsu helps me the most. Being 135lbs forces me to be more cognizant of the other person’s actions as well as my own. Jiu-Jitsu provides a less emotional way to prepare for what would otherwise be a very chaotic situation with a calmer mind, which then allows you be more aware of what is happening to you and what you can do. Just like @bobburnquist & @riokid, the #jiujitsu / #skateboarding connection is strong with this one! I first saw @iamwillmorton shredding at the @bellevueskatepark almost 3 years ago. He was incredible back then and now at only 12 yrs old he’s also a high level #baseball player too. When @will2liv told me that he started Jiu-Jitsu I was super stoked. I finally got a chance to roll with him and his sister and I had a blast. My awesome coworker Demetrius was nice enough to let me work on some #weaponretention from the #graciesurvivaltactics curriculum at the end of our bi-annual 10 hr in-service training. Aside from a few exceptions, if you are stuck on the ground @ryrongracie and @renergracie would say that overhooks are best for punch protection and underhooks are best for weapon retention. DT training like this occurs on-duty in our department each month for our patrol officers (and each week for our new hires) in our Defensive Tactics room.
