Training periodically in uniform helps you realize how different it is. Wearing the vest and belt significantly limit torso flexion, and boots get stuck on shirts, jackets and any other loose clothing. Retaining your tools/weapons is another variable that adds to the difficulty (My taser and radio have fallen out on their own more than once while stuck on the bottom of the fight). Aside from the #selfdefense and #fitness benefits, this is where #jiujitsu helps me the most. Being 135lbs forces me to be more cognizant of the other person’s actions. Jiu-Jitsu provides a less emotional way to prepare for what would otherwise be a very chaotic situation. With a calmer mind, you can be more aware of what is happening to you. I’m very thankful our department allows us time to troubleshoot things like this on-duty, and also grateful to have coworkers like Nicholas for letting me explore how moving with the gear feels in a variety of positions. ???⚫️?⚫️?**shoes were cleaned before stepping on the mats**?? we would love to have more practitioners and good people on our team and #wearehiring! I felt like the açaí brick that got thrown into the @nateorch10p @10thplanetseattle Vitamix and it was amazing! Like many of the best practitioners in the ?, Nate simultaneously puts people in constant danger of a submission, but also controls the grapple in training enough to keep his students safe. It’s a mastery of that balance I hope to one day come close to. If you’re wondering why I’m laughing, it’s because I am slowly recognizing some of the pathways he takes to get the finish. JH is one of our department’s incredible volunteers. Born in Berlin, JH eventually moved to the United States and served 9 years in the @usarmy earning the rank of sergeant in the artillery. After serving our country he worked in banking before finishing his career. He has been volunteering his time with BPD for our national recognized team for 14 years, most of which spent at our Crossroads substation. When he’s not helping us, he spends time with his family and is a treasurer and Honor Guard member of the American Legion (post 161).
