One of the first sweeps I learned was the hook sweep (aka tripod sweep). It’s a fun one to try against someone who is standing and it works really well with the punch block series from the GST and Combatives curriculum. Presuming the back of your duty belt is clear it feels pretty similar in uniform versus without. For those who are familiar, I noticed that the sickle sweep (aka cross sweep) is much harder to hit with a duty belt on because being on your side often twists up the belt and shifts the gear around. At the end of last year I began helping out with recruiting for our department. Back when we had almost two dozen vacancies I remember being on patrol explaining our staffing dilemma to a bunch of kids in the area. I said “You guys, how are we going to get people to consider working for us?… What can I do?” And one of the kids who was probably around 9 told me: “Just show people how cool your job is.” I try to keep that in mind with every photo or video that I share. Thank goodness we have some incredible people in the right positions to showcase just how cool it can be. We are projected to be as close to full staffing as we have ever been for at least the past 10 years and we will keep going. We have plate carriers in each of our patrol vehicles that weigh about 20lbs. I wanted to feel how the extra weight of that plus the regular gear (about 40lbs total) affected my ability to move.
