When properly applied, it is an effective and safe maneuver that will render a combative or potentially assaultive person unconscious in 4-7 seconds. There are millions of applications of this and other variations of carotid artery occlusion performed by #jiujitsu and #judo practitioners all over the world each year without any injury. Practitioners of those arts are often surprised to find out that many police departments place this technique at the same level of force as using a firearm. The bilateral compression of the carotid arteries allow a smaller person a realistic chance to survive and control someone who is much bigger and stronger. We introduced some techniques, principles and concepts from the #graciesurvivaltactics course focusing on survival from the bottom of the fight. A few of our new hires were running a Tabata protocol workout and they were nice enough to let me be jump in as one of the stations in the circuit. If you’ve never tried rolling in uniform (or regular clothes) I highly recommend it to see what the differences are. Greatly reduced torso flexion due to the vest and belt, retentions get inadvertently released, belt keepers are absolutely necessary, and the soles of your boots get caught on loose clothing **shoes were cleaned before stepping on the mats**??. I like to keep the back of my belt clear because having stuff positioned there hurts if you get stuck underneath someone. In a perfect world with no time constraints I’d like to think I would practice learning movements on both sides equally. With only a finite amount of time for repetitions however, that is not always possible. How would you divide the reps between each side to get comfortable with the motor pattern? Learn one side first or both sides simultaneously? Would your answer be different for offensive techniques (takedowns, submissions) versus defensive (escapes, counters)?
