My stand up game is laughable, but #shadowboxing is another fantastic #bodyweight exercise that can be done almost anywhere. I tried to do seven 3 minute rounds of @basruttenmma’s boxing #workout, and to spice it up I added a knee at the end of every combination. Dynamic movement in full uniform is very difficult. Most of us have gear that weighs at least 20lbs / 9kg, and that extra weight adds up fast when you are trying to move quickly. The first time I tried a few rounds of Thai kicks to our heavy bag my core was really sore the next few days. Torso rotation isn’t really inhibited, but getting your hips to whip around for effective strikes is harder and much more tiring. If you notice the momentum made my gun belt twist around even with belt keepers. Good to know beforehand. Feeling the inevitable aches and pains that come with being 46 made me reevaluate a lot of things in my #training routine. I was having really bad shoulder impingement (thanks #jiujitsu) and had to reduce my mat time to once per week or less.
I started to mess around with some of the movements from @da_rulk’s #RFTlevel1 course, something I was lucky enough to attend at the beginning of Summer. It has since become a staple of my routine, particularly when I have less than 30 minutes to get a workout in.
I was pleasantly surprised that my shoulder impingement didn’t affect my ability to do the 9 movements. Prior to the course I never gave much thought to doing bodyweight workouts because I thought it would be “too easy,” especially since I’m so light. Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong! 😂 Additional benefits are not needing any equipment, the minimal space needed and the ability to scale and modify for physical limitations or injury.
The #sitthrough is probably the most known of the RFT movements, and I think also looks the coolest. 😎 It is a wrestling based movement that Rulk modified slightly to mitigate stress to the shoulder joint. The knee is one of the primary reference points and it moves to the area where the opposite hand is before returning and alternating sides. The movement can be done stationary or while moving with one hand lifting off the ground or remaining in place. I was surprised by how much it worked my core and quads.
I’m still old, inflexible and uncoordinated, but definitely feel like I can move around a little more comfortably. My shoulder could heal up and I didn’t have to sacrifice my conditioning. 🤙🏽 #police #fitness #oldman #trainweeklyorfightweakly #aiea #oahugrown

I was 4 years into my LE career and in my 30’s when I started the journey and now I can’t imagine being stuck on my back and not knowing what to do. Ideally we’d have training on duty but most departments don’t have the funding or subject matter experts to pull that off. Never too late to start! Many schools let you try a class for free and great nonprofits like @adoptacopbjj are available for us too. Main thing is the school vibe is positive and safe. Working on some #headlock counters with help from Dr. Alex. Good to know that the techniques work against much bigger people.
The belt and vest greatly limit torso flexion, and the extra weight of my kit (20lbs /9kgs) really adds up towards the end. Rolling with boots on is also different because of the limited ankle flexion and the treads getting stuck on loose clothing. Also good to know all the stuff that will likely fall out of my pockets. Can’t really see it but I’m also wearing an open top magazine pouch from my firearms coach @trigger_freeze to test / evaluate. We tried a few before, and although they are easier to access, some of them have zero retention and fall right out. 😬
I like to keep the back of my belt clear just in case I fall or end up on my back. Very painful to have stuff back there, even on soft surfaces. Keep that space clear is much easier with the external carrier but there’s often a compromise in accessibility and retention so it would be good to verify those things in training.
I am lucky to work for a department that has subject matter experts who work in the training unit and have time to provide more high quality, on duty training than a lot of places, but it’s still not enough. It’s unfortunate that as a profession we typically have to seek out training on our own time to be proficient, and we are working on being able to provide more opportunities to train on duty here.
It is unrealistic to expect any officer to have proficiency without being provided the adequate time at work to train and keep those skills sharp. The calls to remove or reallocate funding in many cities results in even less training time at those places because training (presuming there is any) is usually the first thing to get cut from budgets. Less training increases the likelihood of injuries for everyone.

We make all of our new hires experience being stuck underneath someone while getting punched. Using your hands to access a knife/gun sounds possible, and you may be able to articulate using one, but introducing it will be difficult if the other person is actively swinging at you.
IF a weapon is introduced by the person stuck on the bottom, retention in close quarters is also very challenging and is another issue people don’t usually think about when they say “I would just shoot/stab someone if they were punching me.” A wise former coworker once told me “Everything works, and everything fails.”
Concepts and principals:
If you are stuck on the bottom and someone is trying to hit you, managing the distance is really important. “Winning” from inferior positions often means just surviving them until the top person has less energy. Feet on the hips (when the other person is standing or kneeling) and closed guard (with head and arm control) helps to either fill space or take it away. Also the tripod or hook sweep is typically available when someone is standing over you with a bladed stance. If you’re going to try in uniform, the main thing for safety (after a safety check to remove live weapons) is that the person who is punching has to be able to modulate their intensity depending on the bottom person’s ability to comprehend what is happening.🥋🚔🤙🏽 #police #selfdefense #jiujitsu #graciesurvivaltactics #trainweeklyorfightweakly

An unholstered #firearm in close quarters is a huge liability, and it gets even sketchier when the fight is grounded.
Generally speaking, getting up from the ground is the goal. However, getting up also creates back exposure, which is something that is generally very bad in close quarters.
I started these drills on my back, gun unholstered. Just like in regular #jiujitsu, if you are stuck on the ground, use your feet/legs as wedges. It will give you a much better chance of retaining control of a gun or other weapon.
Things I thought about:
Can you reasonably articulate shooting an unarmed person who is trying to disarm you? If your answer is yes, where would the rounds go? Even if someone is mortally wounded, they will probably not die until several seconds later, which means you have to keep fighting. I believe humans can remain conscious after losing almost 2 liters of blood.
When there is a weapon involved in the grapple, all positions suck. Even when I hit the scissor sweep to mount I still had to use both of my hands for retention purposes. I know some people would say “eye gouge, stab” or some other no holds barred tactics, but the dilemma is your hands and limbs can only serve one function at a time. Control or attack, but not both simultaneously.
It should be noted that the exigency and details of this would not be captured very well with a body camera due to the range that the fight takes place in. Also, even though we are very close to each other, trying to aim for and shoot at the arms or legs of a person who is trying to kill or disarm you as a way of stopping them (eg. “just shoot them in the leg”) is unrealistic.
As always, everything works, and everything fails. Better to know in training than to find out when it’s real. I’m really lucky to have guys like @natetrahan who are willing to help me learn. A few days ago I responded to a call to try and support the family of a young man named Bilal who had just died. He was only 32 years old. I was told that his 6 year old son was there and was asked to assist with keeping him company. Our substation has a supply of donated stuffed animals, stickers and other things that we give away to kids who stop by. Occasionally we also give them away to a young person who is going through a terrible situation. I grabbed a few of the items and drove to the scene. I remembered that I had my ‘ukulele, so I brought that too, just in case.
When I arrived I met the 6 year old. He was sitting in the driver’s seat of one of our sergeant’s patrol car, playing with the lights and occasionally the siren. I introduced myself and after giving him the stuffed animal and some stickers I played “Over the Rainbow” by the late Isarael Kamakawiwo’ole for him. He seemed to enjoy it and I taught him how to play “C major” on my ‘ukulele. He was such a character. When I shared my handcuffs with him he handcuffed my wrist and tried to attach the other cuff to the steering wheel. 😂 A few minutes later he asked if his dad was okay. I didn’t know what to say. 😢
Sarge suggested stopping by again today to check on the family. Before I went I stopped by Music & Arts store to see if they had any small ‘ukuleles. The store owner Mike remembered me from when I bought my ‘ukulele and when I told him about why I was looking for another one he kindly gave me 50% off the cost.
When I brought it to the family I got to meet Ruby, grandma of the 6 year old and mother of Bilal. Ruby told us some great stories about her son, and her grandson will surely enjoy hearing them one day. I also got to meet Bilal’s brother Jesse. I gave the ‘ukulele to her and she said she would give it to her grandson and let me take this picture. Very emotional. Rest In Peace Bilal, we’ll keep an eye out on your ‘ohana.🤙🏽
