My good friend and firearms coach @buliwyf_actual let me use a spare belt and training holster set up that is identical to what I wear on duty so I can beat on it to see how it holds up in training. In addition to rolling and having friends pull on the grip to test the retentions, I recently did 3 sets of the following while hanging onto the holster with a training gun: 10 pullups, 10 seconds of hard pulls, and 10 seconds of hanging from just the grip. Total time under tension about 1 minute 30 seconds. I used a @safarilandgroup belt, Safariland holster (6360RDS ALS/SLS), Safariland UBL mid-ride, and a QLS fork and receiver. Also installed was a Negative Cant Plate (NCP) by @the_theory_police / @blackboxcustoms_ and it was all held together by Safariland OEM factory bolts.
I did some draws afterwards and everything appeared to be intact from the belt buckle to the holster retentions and the NCP. Having said that, Anthony said that the cumulative effect of doing this repeatedly would eventually cause break. It is very reassuring to know the entire set up was able to handle that and not break. Aside from punches, headlocks are one of the most common behaviors in a fight. This is a #headlock counter & handcuffing transition is from the #graciesurvivaltactics course. It addresses a counter to a headlock where your posture is already broken, the subject’s hands are united and their feet are parallel to your feet. I like this one because it is the same response whether you are in open space or against a wall like this demo. The gear also didn’t really interfere with this movement and it works on concrete or black top. And as effective as it is, we must always remember that everything works and everything fails. Observations from rolling in uniform: it’s a lot harder! Reduced torso flexion due to the vest and belt, retentions get inadvertently released, belt keepers are absolutely necessary, the soles of your boots get caught on loose clothing, and stuff in my pockets fell out. I like to keep the back of my belt clear because having stuff positioned there hurts if you get stuck underneath someone. I am very lucky to have opportunities to experience the above with folks like Cameron so I will hopefully be prepared in a real situation. Reviewing some techniques from the #graciesurvivaltactics course. The GST was my introduction to #jiujitsu 12 years ago and for its techniques, teaching philosophy and instructor development, it is easily the most important course I’ve taken in my short 16 years of working in law enforcement. Rolling in uniform is difficult, and I think it’s a good thing to experience at least a few times in training. The vest and belt greatly reduce torso flexion, and the soles of your boots get caught on loose clothing. Retentions for various tools also get inadvertently released (taser, mag pouches, radio) and belt keepers are absolutely necessary. We rolled around with some open top magazine pouches at the station and I was not surprised at how easily the mags fell out. Tool accessibility has to be balanced with retention. I like to keep the back of my belt clear because having stuff positioned on your back hurts a lot if you get stuck underneath someone. Three years ago yesterday. Every once in a great while you get a chance to be part of something you can tell is going to be very special from the moment you hear about it. Three years ago last night was one of those times. 12 of my coworkers stepped up to fight in memory of our dear friend and coworker, Bellevue PD Corporal John Nourse. At 38, John died on December 1st, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. His commitment to public service (5 years as a firefighter, 10 years with BPD) is impressive, but we all miss who John was as a person most of all. Detective Andy Smith came up with an idea to have a boxing smoker with proceeds going directly to John’s three children. Our chief thought it was brilliant, and so did we. Andy’s work bringing everyone together and coordinating the various moving parts was why we were able to make it happen.

About two and an half years before John died, we were chatting in the locker room at our station when he mentioned he was looking to get Quincy into martial arts. He mentioned a flyer he saw tacked up on the wall of our Defensive Tactics (DT) room about a gym that had just opened off of Richards Road called Elite BJJ (now @t3maofbellevue). John knew the effectiveness of Jiu-jitsu from the DT training sessions we did at work and after listening to me talk about how awesome my introduction to the art was thanks to @ryrongracie and @renergracie. I told John that I had first met coach @warriorstrengthtrainer at one of Rener’s seminars and that he was a great guy and coach. I also knew Q would be in great hands with professor Andrea, professor Miriam, and prof. Jessica. Fast forward to the super fun match between Quincy and I in celebration of John’s life and the circle is complete. If you look closely you can see John’s Corporal stripes and BPD patches which we sewed onto a special gi for Quincy. I believe we raised 13K+ for his children🥋🚔🤙🏽
