There isn’t enough space on here to articulate the impact that @ryrongracie and @renergracie have had in my life. Adopting their philosophical approach to the art and the importance of eating healthy is the main reason why my body is still operating and intact at 46 after more than 11 years of training. Their friendship and mentorship beyond jiu-jitsu has helped through the tough times and it has also been a blessing getting to know Eve, Victoria, and their amazing children.
Jiu-jitsu has given me so many things in addition to helping me better protect myself and others.
It has given me the confidence to engage with our #community, it has given me the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and connect with them literally and figuratively. All the outreach that I have done through skateboarding and music would not occur without jiu-jitsu being in my tool belt first.
I will do my best to represent the art and continue to use it as a way to bring people together.

A few months ago I had the privilege of getting to represent my profession and compete in a super fun event called “Cops vs Stonerz” hosted at @hrbjj. The event was a fundraiser for @adoptacopbjj, which provides police officers the opportunity to train at affiliated schools across the country.
I do not compete regularly (last match was in 2015), and this was my first time doing nogi. Being 46 years old certainly didn’t give me an edge either 😂.
@agmastajitz is an awesome purple belt from California. Like many light featherweights, he has a great guard and after sweeping me I spent most of the first 6 minutes stuck in the bottom of the mount. I was lucky enough to escape but then was almost finished in Adrian’s inverted triangle. After the third overtime it was clear that he was the superior grappler.
I was very grateful to have the opportunity to represent #lawenforcement and #jiujitsu in some small way. Also neat to get the match commentary from @robertdrysdalejj and color commentary by @renato_laranja. Next time I hope I can go against someone closer to my age, maybe in the 🥋.
Much of the credit for being able to survive I give to @ryrongracie and @renergracie. Without their friendship, encouragement and guidance I probably would never have started training. More recently, getting my butt kicked by
@nateorch10p and his noon class whenever I was able to get in there was invaluable as well. For the past 2 years I have only been able to train about once a week so I had to rely on RFT workouts courtesy of @da_rulk to stay in shape.
Mahalo to @mitch_aguiar3 for creating a nonprofit that helps officers get the training they deserve and need. It’s indisputable that everyone is safer with Jiu-Jitsu.

After completing a successful takedown my good friend and coworker @larryperreira starts reaching for his waistband.
Should I stay engaged or create distance? The answer is almost always, “It depends.” There are so many variables to consider, and any one of the variables could change the answer.
Variables:
-Is the person reaching for something that could be used as a weapon?
-If it is a weapon, is it used optimally in close quarters or with distance?
-Presuming you are armed, will you be able to access your weapon in close quarters and will it still be effective?
-Are there other people nearby that will help you or the other person? If not, how long can you safely wait until help arrives.
Takeaways for me:
-Creating distance when Larry had a pistol allowed him to get at least 1-2 shots off before I could even unholster.
-Purposely staying in close quarters when I know there is an edged weapon in play (like the first clip) will greatly increase the likelihood of you getting cut.
-When dealing with edged weapons there is no positional hierarchy in close quarters. Every position is bad.
-Everything works and everything fails.
We are using training @sigsauerinc p320 pistols from our @virtra.inc 300 system. 🙏🏽🤙🏽

5 years ago this week @producerkinsey and a few people from @komo4 followed me around for a few days for a piece they wanted to do. I met @ericjohnsonkomo and shared some of the good that we do for our #community. I share it to remind myself that regardless of what job you have or how old you are, we can all make a difference in our own way. Ezikiel, Tito and Asili are all in high school now Ariel is doing his thing and Simon turned pro a few years ago. I hopefully have a few more years to go before I call it a career, and I would be lying if I didn’t say that the negative perception of police nationwide hasn’t made me consider doing something else. The clinch is a range of fighting in #muaythai that has an infinite number of possibilities, counters and re-counters. I incorrectly assumed that if I established inside limb position I’d be safe from elbows and punches. Wrong! Generally speaking, inside limb position is better, however, there is a lot of game from the clinch besides just looking for inside positioning. My good friend @warriorstrengthtrainer was super patient with me and he did an awesome job of explaining and showing me some incredible details about clinch work in the art of eight limbs. So much to learn! 🙏🏽🤙🏽
