Our department provides more on duty training than many other agencies, but right now there just isnβt enough time offered to gain mastery of a something like protecting yourself from punches while stuck on the bottom of the fight so we have to seek it out on our own. How awesome would it be to work with a whole squad of people like @arndtucool who get out of their comfort zone and seek out opportunities to better themselves. He works in an area that is about an hour away from us but came by to work on some stuff from the #graciesurvivaltactics course. This was his first time doing any kind of ground work since the academy. Great job. So much can happen in such a short amount of time. Fortunately or unfortunately, everything works, and everything fails. While nothing was successful 100% of the time, there were things that worked more often. Training tools: @nltsirt 110 (glock) and @nltsirt 20 (Sig p320 full size) with @nightsticklighting. Iβm super grateful to have the time, tools, and people like @dylan_2na and @kai_ozeki to help me. ππ½π€π½ #police #firearms #fitness #outreach #aloha #makeadifference #trainweeklyorfightweakly #aiea #oahugrown

I recently had the privilege of being invited on the @iura_llc Leaderist #podcast hosted by Lexi and Cali and I got to speak about my first experience and exposure to #jiujitsu which began a little more than 12 years ago. Itβs pretty cool to see how the art has helped me develop as a person while simultaneously providing me with a way to protect myself, control someone without hurting them, get a great #workout, release stress, and also providing a way for us to build positive relationships in our #community. While I agree that it would be fantastic if all officers regularly trained, I do not think achieving a belt or rank should be a prerequisite. Jiu-jitsu, like so many other things, can be learned during the career of someone in #lawenforcement, and people like @renergracie have proposed feasible ways for cities and departments to provide incentives for all officers to learn this amazing art. Itβs been a super cool journey so far for sure. ππ½π₯ππ€π½ #police #selfdefense #graciesurvivaltactics #trainweeklyorfightweakly
2021 will be much more sick for several people in our #community thanks to the incredible generosity of @mikevallely and his company @streetplant! I hope this video captured how stoked I am right now. #skatecreateenjoy #streetplantbattalion ππ½π€π½
The amount of time that we are provided for #training on duty is more than many other departments. However, when considering the amount of time that a subject matter expert (in any field) devotes to their particular craft, we are simply not given enough time during our work day to continually improve. Hopefully this will change one day, but in the meantime, we are left to train on our own time in order to get better. Going into my 18th year in #lawenforcement, I have seen that skills and attributes are often taught and practiced in isolation. This makes sense for a beginner to prevent information overload and being overwhelmed. However, after a minimal amount of proficiency is achieved, I think motor patterns and specific skills should be consolidated. Not only is this a more efficient use of time, it is actually a more realistic representation of how those activities will be applied.
If someone doesnβt have a satisfactory level of #fitness, they should focus on that. Same for #defensivetactics, #firearms proficiency, or any endeavor. At this point in my journey, my goal is to slowly but surely consolidate the various components in training more often. More birds with less stones, or something like that. Day by day. ππ½π₯π€π½ #police #selfdefense #jiujitsu #dryfire #speedreload #police #trainweeklyorfightweakly #aiea #oahugrown

An unholstered #firearm in close quarters can be a huge liability. It gets even sketchier when the fight is grounded. In that position, your chances of retaining the pistol increase greatly by using the #jiujitsu principle of incorporating your legs and using the feet and shins as wedges to manage the distance. Even though @_reeseanthony_ is a foot taller than me and almost 100lbs heavier, once his legs were no longer in the mix he was very vulnerable to being disarmed or knocked out. I think it is important to note that in spite of the huge size difference against me, and the fact that I am unarmed, Anthony would be able to reasonably articulate shooting me in this situation. You can see the green laser indicating he hit me in the torso, but as is often the case in real life, even if a handgun round mortally wounds me, I will probably not die from it until several seconds later, which means you have to keep fighting. It should also be noted that even though we are very close to each other, aiming for and shooting at the arms or legs of a person who is trying to kill you as a way of stopping them is totally unrealistic.
Another interesting thing was that the turtle position (being on your forearms and knees) seems to have a practical application when the focus of the other person is to disarm you. While it would generally never be recommended to turn away from someone attacking you, going to your knees allows you to use you body as a wedge to prevent a disarm temporarily and gives you a chance to get your legs back into the fight, particularly if the person chooses to disengage and start punching. We are using a @nltsirt 20 (Sig p320) pistol with @nightsticklighting. Day by day. π₯π€π½ #police #selfdefense #trainweeklyorfightweakly #graciesurvivaltactics #aiea #oahugrown #weaponretention
