Armbar from back control – advanced details.
.
In old school BJJ it was preferable to fall on the choking arm side (“strong side”). As the BJJ progressed we found that the “weak side” opens up a lot of possibilities you don’t have in the choking arm side. If you control him properly, it’s not easier to escape as we used to believe.
One of the possibilities is the armbar from this position.
I think it is preferable to try to get the choke as much as possible. The choke is more stable and you don’t lose the position if it fails. But sometimes you need to switch strategies and the armbar can come in handy.
.
I like to keep my legs at the side of his legs. I hook the far leg from the outside and the other leg is resting on top of it. I call it “poor man’s body triangle” – since my legs are too short to comfortably use body triangles 😢
First of all, I attack the choke. I want to get a deep grip on my opponent’s lapel, but he defends well. Both of his hands are up, defending, so it is easy to grab them.
The controlling hand (the hand under his armpit) grabs the palm of his hand (so it will decrease his ability to grab with it and secure it if needed).
Even when I conspire to get the armbar, I keep harassing the choke with the choking arm (if you get the grip, I’d suggest switching to the choke instead of the armbar) and keep him distracted.
I push his body with my legs to create some distance between us (I push the heel of my bottom leg with my top leg).
I create a frame on his neck so he won’t be able to close the distance I created, so my leg could pass freely over his head.
While I pass the leg over his head, I use the framing arm’s hand to grab his palm with it as well. It serves 2 purposes:
1. 2 hands are stronger than 1.
2. I want to try to reduce his ability to defend the arm. He is less likely to grab something or grab it with the other hand. If I can do it, I will bypass the hard work of breaking his defense.
This weird grip is not something I can lean back with, because it creates pressure on my arm, so I quickly switch grips as I begin my dissent.
