A few days ago I responded to a call to try and support the family of a young man named Bilal who had just died. He was only 32 years old. I was told that his 6 year old son was there and was asked to assist with keeping him company. Our substation has a supply of donated stuffed animals, stickers and other things that we give away to kids who stop by. Occasionally we also give them away to a young person who is going through a terrible situation. I grabbed a few of the items and drove to the scene. I remembered that I had my ‘ukulele, so I brought that too, just in case.
When I arrived I met the 6 year old. He was sitting in the driver’s seat of one of our sergeant’s patrol car, playing with the lights and occasionally the siren. I introduced myself and after giving him the stuffed animal and some stickers I played “Over the Rainbow” by the late Isarael Kamakawiwo’ole for him. He seemed to enjoy it and I taught him how to play “C major” on my ‘ukulele. He was such a character. When I shared my handcuffs with him he handcuffed my wrist and tried to attach the other cuff to the steering wheel. 😂 A few minutes later he asked if his dad was okay. I didn’t know what to say. 😢
Sarge suggested stopping by again today to check on the family. Before I went I stopped by Music & Arts store to see if they had any small ‘ukuleles. The store owner Mike remembered me from when I bought my ‘ukulele and when I told him about why I was looking for another one he kindly gave me 50% off the cost.
When I brought it to the family I got to meet Ruby, grandma of the 6 year old and mother of Bilal. Ruby told us some great stories about her son, and her grandson will surely enjoy hearing them one day. I also got to meet Bilal’s brother Jesse. I gave the ‘ukulele to her and she said she would give it to her grandson and let me take this picture. Very emotional. Rest In Peace Bilal, we’ll keep an eye out on your ‘ohana.🤙🏽
