On June 30, 2024, D’Vontaye Mitchell was causing a disturbance at a Hyatt Regency Hotel in Milwaukee. Four hotel employees intervened (2 security guards, one receptionist, and one bellman) and after dragging him outside they held him in prone restraint for approximately eight minutes before he died due to “Restraint asphyxia and the toxic effects of cocaine and methamphetamine,” according to the medical examiner.
Preventing tragedies like these is exactly why we created the SafeWrap lateral restraint system.
If anyone has contacts at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Group, please have them contact Gracie University. We would like to sponsor their workplace violence prevention coordinators to receive SafeWrap instructor certifications so that all Hyatt employees can learn the system.
SafeWrap enables users to restrain aggressive, suicidal, or emotionally disturbed individuals without the use of joint locks or choke holds and the entire system was designed to avoid compression of lungs so the restrained individual can breathe freely, reducing the chance of a panic response and increasing the chance of a safe outcome for all involved.
