This is a story about how Robert Drysdale & his team allegedly cheated at ADCC 2007 to defeat Marcelo Garcia in the final of the absolute division. The alleged match fixing led Robert to having an easy path to the finals where he went on to defeat Marcelo. Marcelo was on track win double gold at ADCC 2007 with 100% submission rate – a feat only accomplished before by Roger Gracie. With witness reports & the facts laid out, we leave it to you to decide!

I mean marcelo is a beast and I believe he is one of few who actually want to be good at jiu jitsu and get the sub when possible. If Marcelo was Gordon’s height however, I truly believe this match would’ve ended up different. In fact I think he would’ve been an amazing match for Gordon had he not been a kid at the time this match occurred lol
angel666 says
No ! Marcelo is superior to Drysdale 10 times over but Drysdale genuinely DARCE chocked Marcelo after Marcelo offered his neck 4 times to Drysdale by way of a sthinky single leg and the fifth time Drysdale accepted the GIFT .
xkidmidnightx says
It looks fake, but it’s been 15 years since I watched it so I don’t know what they went through getting to that match. They could just be tired.
docterdoctor says
What’s really weird about this is why is Galvao getting a pass while everyone is ganging up on drysdale? I mean drysdale did beat Garcia?
snappiegappie says
"drysdale Fix matches" is a big allegation. Mo Jassim sounds like a dick in this messaging. In bjj teammates usually dont even compete against eachother, in ADCC they had to so they did. If galvao was losing so much in the gym then obviously he had accepted his loss already which didnt make him want to fight that hard. Probably he also wanted to help his teammate so he didnt try 100%. Do you call that fixing? no. Was it bad luck for Marcelo? yes. Did Drysdale beat Marcelo ? yes
Mikey B. says
I've never seen that Drysdale / Galvao before and if you play the video at 1.5 X speed then and only then will it look like a high level grappling fight between 2 of the best at normal speed. This match is a warmup roll you do at the gym to get limber. It doesn't surprise me with all the drugs, insider gambling on fixed matches, crooked refs and "friends" not fighting in the medal rounds to split the jackpot. And people wonder why BJJ has never even made it to ESPN 14.
Chase Harford says
I think the obvious fake is when he was basically ready to tap as soon as he was in the rear naked then the galvao pulled Drysdale arm to sink the choke up. He didn't fight his arm at all just had his hand ready to tap
Levi Parker says
So the argument is that had Galvao worn out Drysdale as he should have (and he absolutely should have), then it would be fair? Or Marcelo wins?
Nicholas Gabbard says
Galvao didn't stand a chance. Don't see what the problem was. Drysdale was a bad dude.
Elion Xhemajli says
Andre didn’t want to see Marcelo in the finals.
G the Mattress guy says
Galvão was getting tapped left and right by drysdale for that camp
Byron b says
Dryesdale was far and beyond better than Galvao at that point. Some of you seem to be referencing current day Galvao with Galvao from 14 years ago. At that point in time, Dryesdale was that guy. Just deal with it – Dryesdale smashed everyone in training , just like this. Knee cut to Darce, head/arm or back – whatever u gave him , he'd take . Galvao's performace does look insipid, but that's probably due to the fact that mentally he was already beaten with the memory of getting smashed front and center in his mind. He never had a chance
Justin Wright says
What a cheat, marcelo is a centillion times better then Drysdale
KARAN SAWHNEY says
No Wonder Drysdale Student gave up on the Stool. Karmas a Bitch
B-rad West says
the bigger travesty, is the win they handed to Galvao over Werdum. What a joke.
Martin Peyrou says
At that time all the ex Alliance were always partnering up against Alliance, they would do anything to beat Alliance hahaha! For them being against Alliance was being against themselves, their origins, their roots, their style of jiu jitsu. Honor your professor and you'll honor yourself.
David Pignatore says
Never saw that match with Galvao. That was so shady looking. Hate to judge cause there's 3 sides to every story but we all see the same thing. Drysdales comments about getting in a cage and how many people can say they did that, thousands, all over the world do it with much less grappling experience than he has. Not a big deal and weird he thinks he's unique for doing so.
No Yb says
Funny how this comes out when Drysdale is just happening to make the most important documentary about the TRUE history of bjj in Brazil. Bunch of Gracie D riders trying to make him look bad and take away from his massive accomplishment in 2007. I was a fan of his back when he stormed the ADCC and beat Marcelinho and it takes 14 years for this to come out? Right when his documentary and book are about to blow up?
paul john says
It doesn’t look set up to me at all and I was there in New Jersey and watched it live.
Virgin Gains says
I dont think this looks fixed. Considering andre just got slapped by Gordon twice and didn't do anything, maybe he was just shook to compete against someone he knew he couldn't beat.
Sonny Mercado says
I was cheering for Marcelo (as were most people, I’m sure) at the time, but regardless of how he got there, Drysdale tapped him, plain and simple. It comes down to who was better that day, so I really don’t see a problem with this. Would we be talking about how great Drysdale was if Marcelo had an “easy” path and still lost, or would everyone be making excuses for him since he is pretty much everyone’s favorite..?
Lister Dean says
Even the idea of this subject saddens me
GaRdZ says
We need to admit that without eddie bravo, Joe Rogan, Gary Tonon and Gordon Ryan BJJ would not be anywhere as big as it is right now. Certain Brazilians really don't like non Brazilians getting their dues, they never have. Carry on Drysdale you tapped the great MG in ADCC and no one can take that away from you.
A Z says
Galvao threw the fight but Drysdale submitted MG. Hard to know the outcome if Galvao didn't throw the match. Drysdale is bigger than both guys & he's technical. It's obvious Galvao gave Drysdale that win but MG loss to Drysdale
Dwane George says
But landing that choke on Marcelo is still pretty badass none the less
Jon Lau says
Judging from the comments, it seems everyone thinks Drysdale is a cheater. I am not without my biases because I am a fan of Drysdale though. I recall seeing adcc 2007 back when and didnt bat a lash when Robert Drysdale beat galvao. So watching this again more than 15 years later, quite frankly, my opinion didnt change all that much. Now knowing the context, I can believe the match might have been "fixed" but more along the lines, that you are fighting a Teammate so the dynamic of the match is different; it can be less physical because you recognize the other persons game (more flowing and picking your shots)
Not sure if you guys remember, but finals in the absolute with Buchecha and Cyborg in 2013. Everyone was shitting on them because they thought the match was fixed. I guess we will never know but Buchecha said it was not; admitted he made some mistakes and was tired. More recently in ADCC, Garry's match against Gordon seemed like a work in 2019. But since Gordon spoke on multiple platforms about it, nobody even second guessed the intergrity of it.
Galvao was a beast against Pena in 2019, and ill admit, I didnt see the match again Calassans, or Cyborg etc. But if i recall against his fight at 2017 IBJJF worlds finals against Patrick Gaudio, Galvao fought very conservative and did the least he can to secure the win. Galvao's style varies from fight to fight, so I don't think im being delusional to believe that he fought a bit too passively against Drysdale in 2007. I am also willing to believe the possibility that they (Brasa) favoured Drysdale to take out MG in the finals so they agreed to make the galvao a pass. But in the end, i don't think we can ever know. Plus remember how in IBJJF, fights will have Close outs in the Quarters of Semis often from the same teams? Does that make them cheaters??
AND Mo trashing Drysdale intergrity on social media shows a certain character. I suppose he already had beef with him because why would he come so hard on him? I find this a bit dissapointing and that to me is more telling about Mo's character. He keeps repeating that he is a cheater and failed a drug test twice for the UFC. So somehow this implies Drysdale is a cheater?
Like didn't Drysdale Darce the shit out of MG in the finals? Not like that was luck. Drysdale won IBJJF worlds in 2005 so he was at the height of his BJJ career. Im going old school here, but I read an article i believe with Graciemag (since i was a suscriber when people actually had magazines) and Drysdale talked about the psycholigical aspect of the game, and when he won Purple belt worlds when he was travelling between USA and Brazil, he believed he would be world champion so dedicated to train more consistently. He trained super hard an established his legacy with winning worlds in 2005 as a black belt, and winning the absolute at ADCC 2007, then focused on MMA. The man had quite the career and I can't fully understand why Mo is trying to trash his character.
Anyways, I am rambling, and no one reads post that are too long anyways. Believe in what you want i guess in the end.
cree stee says
Is anyone else saying, "who cares"…also, this whole thing just seems like a marketing scheme.
Galvao says he'll compete in ADCC, makes -> makes a controversial post -> Mo drops hot names like Marcelo and Gordon all while mentioning that this upcoming ADCC is going to be Amazing…
Keys to the Truth says
Drysdale shut down Galvao. Pure and simple. Galvao at this stage in his career was not that good and Drysdale was at his peak. Galvao played the exact game he played against everyone else and had miserable results to show for it. There's some matches at AOJ's website with Hafa Mendes vs Galvao and Hafa, whom gives up at least 40 lbs to Galvao, destroys him EVERY SINGLE time. If you've ever rolled with one of these guys, they have that "shutdown" effect on your game, where you can't even do ANYTHING properly. I had the pleasure of rolling w/ Drysdale @ his place in Vegas about… 8 yrs ago and I was doing fairly well vs his UFC students. Thenhe stepped in and subbed me in under 10 seconds. He asked me why I tapped so quickly, to which I replied, why would I fight a deep RNC when you were there in under 10 seconds!? At that point it's just wiser to reset and start over. He's so long and strong, that it's pretty difficult to even frame against the guy. We've ALL had this happen to us, if we're honest. There's some guy, somewhere that no matter how good you think you are, will make you look like a dumbass white belt. Hoger did the same to Rob, he made him look like a passerby. But then again Hoger is in another dimension.
blissoneseven says
What I don't understand is at 10:39 he could've got him with that neck crank but he let it go to adjust it by pushing on his face in a weird fashion. Then Andre like lifts his chin voluntarily to give him a clean RNC.
LION TAMER says
More proof that Bob Drysdale is a scumbag, which I've been saying for years.
PigIron BigIron says
The rules allow, no wait….requirements for for winning.
Lytes Out Clips says
This happened in ADCC before as well, look at Roberto Traven's ADCC Absolute win…
Jesper Termansen says
What does Marcelo say ? Looks like Drysdale got a bit lucky with the darce – but it happens …
V Star says
It just proves MG is the best of the best. Never cheated, never used PEDS, just simply put THE GOAT of the goats. I wish we had more people in BJJ like MG.
