I’d like to know what you guys think about this. The fighter on top gets her arm popped and then gets angry @jenabishopbjj, and then Jena catches a bunch of heat and gets roasted by the local team of keyboard warriors because the injured fighter has to withdrawal from a fight.

The way I see it is that you are 100% responsible for protecting yourself. “Protect yourself at all times” is the name of the game in combat sports. That person’s elbow was in a compromised position for about 12-14 seconds. She had ample time to understand that she was in a bad spot and ample time to tap. She made the decision to continue trying to fight out of it. Jena didn’t rip it recklessly. That was 100% fair play. Also, telling someone to “watch it” is not tapping. Unless she meant “watch it pop because I’m not gonna tap.”

If these were beginners, sure, the attacker should be more considerate and cautious. But they’re not beginners. They’re professionals training for professional fights. On this note, @ibjjf Nogi Pans is next week. Make sure you guys are training cautiously. The week before a competition you should definitely tap early and tap often. It doesn’t mean you suck. It doesn’t mean you aren’t ready for the competition. It just means that you are being smart and taking care of yourself before the tournament. Longevity is more important than your ego.
