The suspect entered the LAPD Harbor precinct at about 9:59pm and the officer had about 40 seconds of interaction with him before the assault began. Like many street fights, the strikes thrown by the suspect are wide, looping punches. Once the officer was as on the ground the suspect bypassed the officer’s legs and went directly for the officers gun. The gun was unholstered with a cross grab by the suspect using his right hand (palm facing the officer) to unholster. In the bodycam footage you can see the Baretta safety was “on” and that likely saved the officer from getting shot. After pistol whipping the officer, the suspect left and shot at another officer before fleeing in a vehicle. What could the officer have done differently? Does law enforcement training adequately prepare officers for this kind of assault?
