Here is a small list of tips and recommendations for the beginner student, aimed to help them make the most out of classes, stay injury free, and stick with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the long run, based on my 22 years of experience with this beautiful art.
1. Be a good drilling partner
2. Tap on your partner, NOT on the mat
3. Don’t wait until it hurts
4. Master the bridge and the hip escapes
5. There is no magic pill
6. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast
7. Master how to do break falls and forward/backwards rolls
8. Be open-minded
9. Don’t compare your progress to others
10. Don’t let your emotions take over, especially when you are in a bad position
